Untruths

Things are not always as they appear. There are several myths going around some of which are perpetuated by schools, some by parents

These are some classic untruths…

Don’t prep or they will get a place you are not suited for

This is a myth put around by schools. They say that if you put in a lot of prep then you are essentially raising your game to an unrealistic level. The idea is that if you stretch your child just for the exams then when they turn up to the school they will be expected to operate at the same level and if that is not their natural level then they would be in a difficult position.

The reality is that all the other children will have studied hard for that exam. When they all turn up to lessons they will be at more or less the same level as your child. Very few people don’t prepare for exams – if you don’t you are putting your child at a disadvantage

No – we don’t have a Tutor

Most kids have a tutor in the lead-up to exam season but parents will often not mention it or even deny it.

Things can become quite competitive as exam season approaches – other parents know your child is likely going for some of the same schools as theirs and they want to keep some form of competitive advantage for their child. I think it is often sub-conscious rather than malicious but in general it is best to try not to consider what other parents say they are doing or not doing – just focus on what is best for your child.
